Description
As a kingdom founded on faith was falling because of apostasy, the prophet Jeremiah taught lessons valuable for us today. His people had turned God's temple and God's Ark of the Covenant into idols, and had even turned aside to false gods, instead of clinging to a pure, simple truth: love God with all of your heart, and love your neighbor as yourself. Greed for material things that resulted in slavery and bloodshed had replaced desire for spiritual blessings. Rulers, Jeremiah teaches us, should be shepherds, feeding and protecting their flocks, not wolves, preying on them. Priests should be teachers of the truth and healers of divisions, not harsh judges of whoever might have a word different from theirs. Love of country can become a liability when it leads a people to turn a blind eye to its own faults. What do we do when things meant for good are turned to evil's use?
Those cast into prison or sent into exile need to cling to God's promises of a better day to come -- a day when the Branch, Messiah, will deliver the faithful from darkness of defeat and despair and rule them with the light of righteousness. Jeremiah teaches us how one cast down into grief by life's trials can overcome them and live triumphantly through faith in the God Who is above and beyond whatever this world may bring to us -- the God Who raises kingdoms up and casts them down for purposes greater than we can conceive. Let's learn the lessons that Jeremiah teaches us -- lessons for life in the imperfect world in which we live. As Jeremiah tells us and shows us in his life, when we answer God's call to serve him, we can do things greater than we can imagine.
