Description

A teenage boy must grow up fast in an adult world. It's violent... and it's coming for him.

A young teenager runs through the dirt of an abandoned industrial estate, in the kind of heat that strips a man of his reason. Ricky and his friend, Liz, fooling around in a dilapidated home once housing factory workers, take one step too far. There are holes in the roof, everything creaks, and they fall through the collapsing floorboards... panicking as they land face-to-face with a corpse.

Deserted by his father and forced to look after his brother as his Ma works three jobs, this City of Forts is Ricky's escape from adults he doesn't trust. If he and his friends inform the authorities, they'll lose their rusting paradise. So they bury the body and hope nobody ever finds out. But there are bad people searching for the dead man and they will tear the streets apart to find him.

What Ricky buried cannot stay hidden. As if powerful interests can smell the corpse's decay, ruthless men, intent on revenge, points their fingesr at the boy. Ricky has no choice - he must shed his innocence and fight his way out.

As bodies pile up, and friendships and family life frays, Ricky knows this - distrust is his closest friend. But it's trust that might aid his escape from the killing heading in his direction.

City of Forts is a gripping coming-of-age epic, aching with loss, redemption, and what violence can do to the best of friends.

The first in a gritty crime trilogy... A must for fans of Dennis Lehane and James Lee Burke.

What readers are saying:

"A stunning tale of crime, corruption, friendship, and betrayal." - Amazon Review

"Readers looking for a deep, multilayered thriller that neither pulls its punches nor shies away from the more emotional aspects of its protagonist will not be disappointed by City of Forts." - Amazon Review

"Helluva storyteller... He can take you to a dark place one page and then have you laughing out loud on another."

- Stephen J. Golds, author of Always the Dead

"Jason Beech has an amazing way with words and characters. His evocative turn of phrase, and his ability to guide us through this story from Ricky's point of view is breathtaking in its simplicity and execution. You can sense the impending doom from the very first chapter, and this feeling never goes away even in the novel's quieter moments."

- Amazon Review

"A haunting tale of death, love, and the American Dream on a US town's mean streets"

- Keith Nixon, author of the bestselling Konstantin series.

"A brilliant read that explores society and all its cracks. Jason Beech expertly balances the nostalgia of childhood adventures with the brutality of life in a very grown-up and dark town. City of Forts deserves to sit equal with the greats as a piece of entertainment and a study of modern life's struggle."

"... gritty coming-of-age tale from a master of description. Compelling reading."
