Description
This is an abridgment of Aristotle's foundational treatise on moral virtue, friendship, and happiness. Whether or not we agree with The Philosopher on all ethical points discussed (e.g. ancient Greek notions on monarchy, slavery, women), his reasoning on "the best way to live" continues to inform, challenge, and strengthen our own like no other.
Approximately sixty-six percent of the original remains in this new version. As with all of Aristotle's surviving works, the text was originally intended as lecture notes rather than edited for publication. My intent in abridging and editing his work is to make the material more accessible to general readers. Aristotle's expression of ideas and reasoning, though always rewarding, may be a bit challenging at times. I have added paragraph headings as quick summaries or guideposts along the way, with the majority of sentences edited for improved readability. A great many examples in support of arguments were removed when I felt that one or two of the best were sufficient to illustrate the point. No essential thought or idea is missing from the original, though a number of minor digressions have been eliminated for the sake of core argument clarity and overall understanding.
