Description

Elephanta Caves

Located in the Mumbai Harbour, on a small island; the Elephanta Caves are a series of rock-cut caves predominantly dedicated to the Hindu Lord Shiva. Apart from that a few Buddhist stupa mounds can be found over here. Carved out of solid basalt rocks, much of the artwork in the caves are damaged or defaced. Still the 5th to 9th Century caves form an important part of the cultural heritage of India, and find its place in the UNESCO World Heritage Site list.

It is one of the two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the city of Mumbai, being inscribed in 1987. The island can be reached via ferry service from the Gateway of India in South Bombay. Originally named Elefante, for the elephant statues found by the Portuguese; it was greatly damaged by the soldiers who made the island their base. Later some initial restoration efforts were made by the British India officials, and then the Government of India after Independence.
