Description
The year is 1864 and Virginia City, Nevada is jumping with silver mines and silver miners.
And murder.
Nell Osborne is a young newspaperwoman, working for her father's newspaper. It's a small venture, just barely keeping afloat with Nell, her father and the paper's photographer, Charles. They've had to fight to get the news first and keep their readers ever since The Territorial Enterprise moved from Genoa to Virginia City.
But as summer heats up and the silver keeps flowing, more miners are shooting each other over claims, and more women are turning up murdered, their hearts cut out. When Nell interviews him about the women, Sheriff Martin Clyde says he has suspects.
Nell suspects him. She was engaged to Sheriff Clyde until her irresponsible heart began to fail. When her life became dependent on a steam-powered canister she wears strapped to her back, with tubes that disappear under her clothing and under her flesh, Clyde broke his engagement to damaged goods. Now the dead women keep showing up on the day Nell Osborne and Sheriff Clyde would have wed, and with their hearts cut out. It's too much of a coincidence.
But the closer Nell grows to Charles, and the closer they come to proving Clyde is the killer, the harder someone tries to separate Nell from the steam-powered heart she wears on her sleeve.
