Description
This story is the combined effort of six women, each of whom was a grandmother with a bit of time on her hands.
The Written Word is the saga of the Ryan family who emigrate from Ireland to Australia in 1862. It is about their obsession with a house - Waterford House - that begins with its builder Kevin Ryan in 1867 and continues down to the present generation.
The action takes place during several months of the current time, 2006, and centres around the incumbent heir to Waterford House, Hunter Ryan, his uncle Alan Fox, who is determined to possess Waterford, and Alan's mother Bridget, who is the link between the original Ryans and the present-day members.
The narrative commences with a wedding and ends with a funeral service.
Throughout the tale the 'written word' is important, appearing as it does in the form of secret letters, agreements, and even newspaper articles.
The characters move through the story with no premonition of the fate that awaits them.
