Penelope Procolis is a high school honor student, blond and blue. She lives with her mother in the gated community called The Mount and her mother drives a Lexus. Her father, Mr. Big Checks, he sends the money.

But her fate is already sealed after a traffic accident leaves one of her friends in the morgue and the others, including Penny, in custody in juvie. Even then she's just waiting to go home. But the judges (there seem to be three of them) are knitting (there seems to be a lot of knitting) and they're triplets or something trippy, and female, so Penny's patented innocent Blond and Blue doesn't phase them. Then there's the small matter of the first time offender death sentence.

The Western Hemisphere trembles on the verge of the autumn equinox, and Penny trembles on the knife's edge between life and death - and whatever lies in between.
