The Great Dismal Swamp one of the largest marsh areas in North America on the Coastal Plain of southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina.

Many stories have been handed down through generations about people who entered the mysterious place and never returned. Some of the people were those escaping slavery and others looking to hide out for alternate reasons. And still others claimed attacks from a monster tucked deep inside the vast swamp. A beast that has an endless food supply and is suited perfectly for life in the Dismal.

There are consistent stories, independent of each other, about a giant turtle-like creature with six legs that is able to walk upright and proves impenetrable to gun fire -- "an organic tank."

Moonshiners and bootleggers saw opportunity on the east side of the North Carolina and Virginia when route 17 opened in 1927. That i,s until the contraband began disappearing along with the people making it. When the monster was encountered in the bog -- the enterprises moved back to the west side of the state(s).

In the 1940's and '50s the stories continued. But most believed these to be fantasy pushed on by rumor and hard-liquor. Yet, the inexplicable evidence remained for the disbelievers to ignore at their own peril.

And up to present-day, the encounters with the great armored beast of The Great Dismal. Including the brief encounter with a big game hunter who claimed to see "the devil himself" rise from beneath the swamp water. This came as no surprise to a respectable portion of locals who already know the age-old beast as the "Dismal Swamp Demon."
