Description

"We are flanked on the left!"

The message delivered by the courier from Stevenson's division was quickly confirmed by the rising intensity of the sound of gunfire coming from the north. Lieutenant General John C. Pemberton's luck had just run out. Ulysses S. Grant and his Army of the Tennessee were closing in.

Trying to serve two masters, Pemberton had been reticent to move the Confederate army out of the Vicksburg defenses to find and attack Grant. President Davis's admonition that Vicksburg must be held, Pemberton felt, ran directly counter to General Joseph E. Johnston's orders. His theater commander had preemptively ordered him to take to the field to attack Grant who had achieved a lodgment south of Vicksburg and had moved east to take Jackson. With conflictlng orders and the ensuing delays, Pemberton made the classic military mistake and divided his forces. Two divisions were left inside the Vicksburg defenses and three taken to the field in search of Grant. This would set the stage for the decisive battle of Champion Hill.

Some historians consider Champion Hill, as the key battle for Vicksburg, to be the actual turning point of the Civil War. Perhaps it was. Read Dooming the Confederacy: The Decisive Battle of Champion Hill and decide for yourself.
