Description
Wiglaff the Shaman goes to Rome under s safe passage arranged by his friend the priestess of the god Mercury. She has arranged for the Caledonian's safe passage to Rome so he can see the wealth and power his people are combating with their fierce resistance. Members of the imperial family are pleased by their priestess's plan since all normal approaches -- including military conquest -- have failed to defeat the wayward barbarians. Wiglaff leaves his own family behind to fend for themselves according to a truce under which he is held hostage. Rome's immensity and corruption impress Wiglaff, who is privileged to visit the most sacred precincts of the city. Dressed in a humble robe and wearing a citizen's ring on his finger, the shaman discusses everything imaginable with Roman experts who are, to be sure, interested in discovering weaknesses in the Caledonian, who is rumored to have been solely responsible for Rome's failure to conquer his domains. Finally, the Romans are frustrated by Wiglaff's uncanny ability to gain much more intelligence from Rome than Rome gained from him. They devise a plot whereby they plan to try him for spying on them with crucifixion as the penalty. The priestess who vouchsafed his journey informs him of the plot against him, and he evades their perfidious plan to return to his homeland before the Romans strike again. He arrives just in time to prepare his people for the Roman advance, which is repelled handily. The shaman returns to his priestly duties while the priestess of Mercury abandons her sacred duties to join her beloved shaman in Caledonia. Of course, Wiglaff has already been married, but he promises the priestess he will protect her for the rest of her life if she should choose to remain.
