Description
"As You Like It" is a five-act comedy by William Shakespeare, written and performed about 1598-1600 and first published in the First Folio of 1623. Shakespeare based the play on "Rosalynde" a prose romance by Thomas Lodge written in 1590.
"As You Like It" subverts the traditional rules of romance. Gender roles, nature and politics are confused in a play that reflects on how bewildering yet utterly pleasurable life can be.
Rosalind and her cousin escape into the forest and find Orlando, Rosalind's love. Disguised as a boy shepherd, Rosalind has Orlando woo her under the guise of "curing" him of his love for Rosalind. Rosalind reveals she is a girl and marries Orlando during a group wedding at the end of the play.
