Description
A widower with two young daughters. An Australian adventuress. And a world at war.
Contemporary Philadelphia. As a single father, Thomas works dawn to dusk to care for his children. But sometimes he thinks it would be nice to have a woman around, not for him, but for his daughters, a woman they could learn from and admire.
That's why he starts telling them the Sheila Stories. The stories begin in Australia in 1935. Sheila is a fearless lover of adventure. She buys a farm and learns to ride and shoot. But then comes the war. The bombing of Darwin. The invasion of Papua New Guinea. Sheila volunteers to drive an ambulance and sees the horrors of war first hand at an Army hospital. Again and again, life knocks her down, but every time, she gets back up again.
The stories are working for the girls. They are inspired by Sheila's spirit and determination and kindness. But Thomas is broken. He still talks to his wife every day even though she passed away seven years earlier. He's stuck in the past, and the girls wonder if the Sheila Stories could ever mend a broken heart.
ADVANCE COPY REVIEWS
The characters are so intriguing, varied, and Sheila is mesmerizing.
I felt like I was there in the middle of everything. I can see me reading these stories to my grandchildren when I visit them.
Sheila is a strong, independent woman - ahead of her time in strength (physical and mental), determination, and the will to live her own path.
This is one of the best stories about a person's life that I have read...
I loved these stories about a woman who takes on the world and throws her own dice in life. It made me think of my Grandmothers on both sides and the strong women in my family. How much this father must love his girls to create the magical character and enrich, encourage and denote strength upon them through her.
The story was inspiring and heartwarming and at the same time realistic and grounded.
