Chief Inspector Salt joins forces with Chief Inspector Jack Hemsley,, in his pursuit of a killer after a body of an elderly man is discovered in a village on the out-skirts of Birmingham. The man's death occurred from a single gun-shot to the head and the bullet cleaned and placed in the victim's jacket. Shortly after, a second body, killed in the same manner, is discovered close to Aston. As the investigation continues, it soon becomes apparent that there is a link between the two victims, but no clues or motives for the two deaths. Before new evidence comes to light, two more bodies are discovered.
