Description
From its inception in 1947 to the present day, the neurosurgical and neurological unit in Walton Hospital has delivered world class care to the people of the region it has served. This work recounts the history of the organisation which became the Walton Centre in the words of many of the people who devised and delivered the care it offered. It is a frank account of the achievements of the Centre in the face of some very difficult challenges.
Fiercely independent, the Centre has become a unique institution: the only NHS trust exclusively dedicated to the care of people with conditions affecting the nervous system. And it has delivered that care in a humane and caring fashion, bringing the highest quality of treatment to patients, as close to their homes as possible.
The Centre is accorded a special place in the affections of Liverpool, and this history gives a small indication of why this is the case.
