Description

Hong Kong... in the sweltering month of August 1937... With a city in turmoil, the hunt for a murderer unravels a web of lies and deceit.

Lockhart Road is a street in the waterfront district of Wanchai on Hong Kong Island... a microcosm of the seamy side of Hong Kong life... a place of sexual temptations, of greed and lust, intrigue and murder...

In the summer of 1937 Hong Kong is a city in turmoil, where war clouds are looming as thousands of refugees flee the war in China. The Japanese have invaded deep into China territory and this new war is threatening to spill over into Hong Kong. The privileged British expatriate community tries to stay aloof from this turmoil around them, yet it soon threatens to engulf their complacent lives too... Inspector Paul Jericho of the Hong Kong Police leads the hunt in the seamen's area of Wanchai for the killer of two young women, bar hostesses, who worked on the Wanchai waterfront. At first he suspects that the killer must be a violent Western seaman, but his investigation soon leads him to suspect a connection with the rich and privileged expatriate community of the Mid-levels... Yet Paul Jericho has another more personal case to solve too: the death of his wife Susan in a hit-and-run incident six months before...
