Description
This poem, "The Dream of Gerontius," is an 1865 poem composed by St John Henry Newman which is made up of the prayer of a dying man, and a pair of angelic and demonic responses. The poem was written after Newman's conversion to Roman Catholicism. In it he explores his new Catholic-held beliefs of the journey through Paradise to God and from there to Purgatory. The poem focuses on the main character as he approaches death and then reawakens as a soul, ready for judgment. A classic poem that was "was written by accident - and it was published by accident."
