Accountable care organizations (ACOs) were created in 2012 to enhance population health, improve patient care, and reduce costs. ACOs represent a rational system of care financing and delivery that unites purchasers, payers, providers, and patients in a system that can evolve and improve. This chapter provides includes an overview of these organizations' care coordination models and an examination of examines whether ACOs are an adequate solution in the attempt to solve our country 's healthcare crisis. Regardless of the selected model, meeting quality objectives, utilization and experience measures are required and expected. New ACOs are in for the long haul and are up for change in processes of care, new reporting systems, staff competencies, cultural change, and analytics. ACOs improve with experience; and the longer they participate in the program, the more likely they to manage costs effectively and earn shared savings. There are many opportunities for improvement.
