Description
Toby Litt's first novel.
Here's the original blurb:
'So,' Jack said. 'You're one hip chick, now.'
'Yeah, I'm one hip chick, brother.'
'What day is it?'
'It's July 29th, 1966,' I said. 'Bob Dylan is dead.'
Actually, it is July 1995 - and Mary, the narrator of Toby Litt's debut novel, Beatniks - has just joined Bedford's very own Beat Generation. There's Jack and his chick, Maggie; there's Neal and his cat, Koko. And, so far, that's it.
But Jack has big dreams for the future: a Beat Happening at Bedford Central Lending Library, a new literary magazine called Cafe Bohemia ('The talk is deepest where the coffee's cheapest') and, one day soon, a road-trip all the way down to Brighton.
However, Jack's dreams are hard to live with, even when they do come true; and Mary's Beatnik life will end up taking her a lot further than Brighton.
