Description
Confessions of Anomie, by Daryl Royer, is a fictional criminal thriller. The book is inspired by a case Daryl studied in law school. That 1960s case is significantly altered, and the facts are changed for thematic purposes, however the decision and the criminal event remain unaltered. The book was written over a long period of time and completed in 2020.
The book is written in first person, and narrated in the present tense, and is about an event that took place in the past. This gives the reader an in-depth look into the thoughts of the main character. The reader takes a ride inside the mind of Howard Anomie, and listens to his confession.
In the book a lawyer travels back to his origins to try to explain to himself how he acted in a moment. His goal is ambiguous and difficult for him to discern, but he knows he must free the past to enjoy his future. This first person story of what might be criminal behavior explores what people do in their attempts to overcome their circumstances. It deals with issues of loss, abandonment, transformation, and justification. The book sets no moral boundaries, but recognizes the character of the community where the man's behavior might be recognized as beyond the justifiable social norms.
The writer exposes subtle criticisms of criminal law and how it treats individuals, while allowing the reader to take a look at the reality of criminal courts. The seriousness of the book makes the reader understand the truth about the problems of trying to judge the individual. Sometimes even the accused doesn't know if he's guilty.
