Description
Colonel Sam Wood, the Fighting Quaker, was a real-lifeSuperhero before the term was even coined. He was friendto every Abolitionist from Abraham Lincoln to John Brown and foe to every slaveholder from Jefferson Davis toHenry Clay. He demanded equality for all, elimination ofslavery and the right to vote for women. He was belittled, ridiculed and threatened by thugs throughout the Union, but he refused to back down. Sam lived life on the edge and the fact he lived as long as he did is attributed by some to divine intervention and others to the 'luck of theIrish'. Regardless, Sam Wood deserves to be rememberedbecause without him and others like him, we might still betrapped in the disgusting swamp of slavery- "the most wicked sin ever invented".
