Description
"God help the man who ever grows to care for you, for you would only bring misery to him as your mother brought misery to me."
Iris Carew lives alone with her father at Helmsley Grange. Forbidden even to mention her mother's name, Iris lives in the shadow of her infidelity and desertion. Now, Iris has discovered that her father has lied to her about her mother's fate - but no sooner has the hope of a reunion been kindled than the body of a mystery woman is found in Helmsley Wood. Will Iris be able to escape the shadow of her parents' past and find true happiness? And what are the motivations of Sir Julian Danvers, the older man whom her father has decided she will marry?
Alice Askew was a prolific and popular novelist who, with her husband Claude, created the occult detective Aylmer Vance. They wrote over ninety novels before their untimely deaths in 1917, when a ship on which they were travelling was sunk by a German torpedo. First published in 1913 and long out of print, The Mystery of Helmsley Grange is an enjoyable Edwardian melodrama of love, crime and passion.
