Description
An epic and often hilarious steam train ride across Turkey, recounted by the author of the #1 bestselling Turn Left at Istanbul. This is the true story of the author's return to Europe in 1978, after a decade of living and working in Asia.
Having been deported from Iran during the Islamic revolution the author made his way back to Europe by the overland route. First on a stripped out bus run by two Iranians planning to make a tidy sum by cramming it full with pilgrims returning from the Haj.
Arriving in the eastern city of Van he takes a four hour ferry trip to Tatvan on the far shore. Here he embarks the Istanbul Express, a steam train with the first class luxury of a bygone era. Sleeping in a Wagons Lits coach and dining in an exotic 1930s restaurant car.
Here he encounters a group of colourful characters who would not be out of place aboard Agatha Christie's 'Orient Express': the mysterious lawyer Erden fresh from a prison in Yerevan, the irrepressible Mr Bhambhani and his sidekick, Mr Iqbal from Karachi, holding court and recounting tales; the good Doctor Baghdadipur and the newly wed Captain Osman. A veritable caravanserai on rails as the travellers set out their anecdotes and tales whilst being hauled across the plains of Anatolia on the 3 day ride to Istanbul... and then there are the goats; on the train, under the train, wondering over the tracks, eating whatever they can find, including the authors luggage.
A must read for anyone who loves travelling: see the sights, smell the smells, taste the food and laugh at the spills.. All the ups and down of being on the road, narrated with a shovel load of humour and just a touch of pathos.
