In Freud's view, dreams are a form of "wish fulfillment," where the unconscious tries to resolve conflicts, whether recent or from the past. However, a "censor" in the preconscious alters this information, as it's often disturbing. While the censor is more relaxed during sleep, it still modifies the content. As a result, dream images are often distorted and require deeper interpretation to reveal the workings of the unconscious.
