Jade French is mystified when she inherits her grandfather Zipacna's home in Chi'país, Mexico. She's neither seen nor heard from him in twenty-five years. If he hadn't cared enough to keep in touch all this time...
Bigger question. Why didn't he leave it to her father? He would be next in line. Jade argues that a trip to Mexico is out of the question. She's too busy climbing the corporate ladder. She's got a lot of vacation time, so she heads south intending to list the place for sale.

As it turns out, she didn't inherit a home; it's a rundown hotel, and her first instinct is to catch the first flight back to California, but something compels her to stay. Jade tries to hire someone for reno. But no one will take the job. At the same time, spooky things begin happening. Who is trying to scare her away? More important: how did her severely broken ankle heal overnight?
Enter eight-year-old Miguel who shadows her every footstep. Something about him says he knows the answers to all the questions. But Jade cannot find him.

One thing does become clear, this place holds more mystery than the mountain of questions clogging her mind. The hotel is actually a school for advanced spiritual training. Why would Zipacna leave this to her? She has zero knowledge of the topic. Some of the answers come in a secret room under the stairs -- in the lofty stack of journals handwritten by her grandfather over the decades.

Gradually, Jade comes to terms with her legacy, repairs relationships thought long lost, and reopens the school.
