Description
Entertainment reporter and playwright Edward Morris and his wife Norma had lived in separate houses for 34 years when they discovered Norma was in the early stages of Alzheimer's.
Although each had established individual careers -- she as a publicist for such Grammy winning artists as Ralph Stanley and Steve Wariner -- Ed decided to move into the home Norma had purchased on her own as her caregiver.
What they had in common was a love for songs from the Great American Songbook, particularly those recorded by Willie Nelson in his classic album, Stardust. That album would become a focal point of their lives as Norma's dementia progressed.
Simultaneously, Ed began chronicling the ups and downs of caring for her on Facebook. These accounts became so popular that eventually Nelson sent Norma a video expressing his thanks and best wishes.
This is no bleeding-heart book. There's plenty of humor and salty language. But it's absolutely honest (down to discussing their outside love affairs), and positively fascinating.
"On behalf of all who have watched loved ones descend as Norma has, for all who would find strength and comfort in these remarkable descriptions of your struggle, please, at some point, publish a book of these posts." -- Thom Duffy, editor
"You tell your intimate story with such loving care and honesty, rare qualities that are often missing in the world today." -- Pat Alger, songwriter
"This is a pleasant surprise, Certainly the best writing that I have read on Facebook. More, please. Beautiful. Brilliant." -- Richard Courtney, radio host
You know how Truman Capote's "A Christmas Memory" is a must? That's how I feel about Edward Morris' "STARDUST: An Alzheimer's Love Story." I got to know Ed and Norma a couple of years ago when Ed hired me to come to their home weekly to do a little singing with Norma. We had fun for almost a year. When Ed started posting their experiences dealing with Alzheimer's on FB, several of us implored him to put them in a book. Here is a true love story with no sugar coat -- more like truth serum. Don't you love to read something real? Wanted you to know before you complete your Christmas shopping. -- Julia Rich
