Description
This book was inspired by an earlier book titled Simple Gifts: Twelve Essays on Gratitude. Designed to diminish the corrosive sense of entitlement that poisons so many human and political relationships, Simple Gifts encouraged non-writers to submit essays describing transformative gifts they had given or received.
Practicing Gratitude is similar in length but weightier in content. It alternates more dramatically between somber and celebratory essays. The book begins with an essay on a life journey in nature by my brother Jim Stewart. A meditation on death by Jeremy Thomas Gilmer appears near the end, followed by an essay on personal transformation by Gwen Beatty. Loss, forgiveness and resilience underlie the essays by Thomas Mengel and Dean Verger. By contrast, my own essays on the transformative effects of a gift I gave and a gift I received are quite upbeat, as are the essays by Dr. Molly Hand, Allison de Kanel, Mat Kelly, Claudia Kuehl, and John Stewart.
When considered together, the essays are a celebration of our connections to each other and the joy life can bring.
