Description
Danny Kaye was fifteen years old when he first encountered Seth. It was a foggy Christmas Eve and Danny was pedalling his bike back home, trying not to be late. The stranger in the long, black coat appeared from nowhere and Danny ran into him, knocking him to the ground. The stranger was on his feet in a second.
"Check your bike is okay, Danny," he said.
Automatically, Danny looked down at his bicycle. When he looked back, the man was gone. The thing that really freaked Danny out though was that the man had known his name.
It would be almost another fifteen years before they met again, and Danny, after enjoying some incredible highs and destructive lows, would be a small step away from ending his life. It is then he learns that he is a guardian of The Machine, an organic/technological structure that maintains the earth's existence. He, Seth and two other guardians must enter The Grid, where Seth must fulfil his destiny.
Dave Potter answered an ad asking for volunteers for a scheme investigating the fight or flight response in the brain; why, sometimes, the most timid of people will suddenly fight for their lives, whilst, on occasion the seemingly stoic will turn and flee. As he was unemployed at the time and the scheme was to run for at least six months with board and lodging thrown in and a sizeable pay-out at the end, it was, in modern day parlance, a 'no brainer'.
Unfortunately, once in residence, it soon became apparent that the scheme was just a front for something far more sinister. It was not long before Dave and four other volunteers were selected for an undisclosed mission. They endured months of punishing training until they became the closest of friends and an elite fighting unit. It wasn't until then; they learned the details of their mission. They were about to be sent back to the twelfth century to apprehend the inventor of a time machine and retrieve the part of the machine he had stolen.
Danny, Seth, Philomena, Sebastian and Labrador, Blue are in The Grid and en route to The Machine. Dave, Frank, Pete, Harry, and Jack are on there way from twelfth century London to Scotland. The Rift destroys the layers between time and dimension and throws their two groups into chaos, where the unbelievable is the least of their worries.
