Description
Danny Campbell first came to Siam in 1997. He spent time at Wongsanit Ashram, and also travelled to various parts of the country, where he had many interesting experiences. As these stories illustrate, he found a special affinity with the people and cultures of Siam. His experiences and affinity shine through in some of these stories. Although written as fiction, it should be noted that they are based on actual events that occurred while Danny was in Siam. The stories are notable because Danny, although a foreigner in Siam, sees and accepts the people in Siam on their own terms, without trying to impose the values of his own culture. As the first story in this collection tells, adapting to the circumstances of a world far removed from the comforts of the farang's everyday world is difficult. But through the new challenges posed by living in the forest, the farang came to experience new ways of being; a world where urban angst gave way to feeling "gentled, humbled, and ready to look at the world through very different eyes." Please enjoy reading these stories, and take time to reflect upon them, and the different worlds that they tell of. Sulak Sivaraksa, 2002
