Description

"Today is the Queen's Birthday. Happy birthday, Your Majesty. I hope you had a good day. I bet you did. I also bet you haven't been lying awake worrying about what to cook for dinner." So muses suddenly-single dad, Dave Brown, as he diarises family life, following the departure of his beautiful but flighty wife Carmen.Rendered an insomniac, Dave records his struggles with a household in eternal disorder and a leaning tower of dirty washing that threatens to decompose into a stagnant sludge. Enslaved by his wife, bossed around by his mother, bullied by his boss and intimidated by Carmen's violent cat, David finds courage amongst the marrows, cabbages, sunflowers and tomatoes of a lush little garden in the shadow of an old factory wall. There, he meets Sarah, a pretty, green-thumbed divorcee with an eternal smile. Sarah makes Dave's knees go wobbly but he can't tell her. He's not sure whether she feels the same and anyway, he's still married. But in the garden, Dave finds friendship and hope as he learns, among other things, how to get snails drunk and why peas and onions are 'the Montagues and Capulets' of the gardening world. While he grapples with endless trips to the supermarket, worries about his shortcomings in the kitchen and laments his failures as the stylist of a six-year-old's hair, David finds in Sarah hope for a better future. But when the garden is threatened with demolition, Dave and his team of eccentric green-thumbs unite in what becomes known as the #givepeasachance protest. They plan a concert with a call for justice that will ring out around the world, or at least around the corner. And then, unexpectedly, Carmen comes home. Will Dave succumb to Carmen's charms? Can the garden be saved from the bulldozers? What of these feelings he has for Sarah? And can the local council be persuaded to 'give peas a chance'? As the seasons change, David digs and delves, mulches and composts - and learns that when life is tended and nurtured, it too can thrive like the most verdant of gardens.
