Description

I spent a year living in China, teaching English, in 2017. Every few days, I'd write home to my friends and family about my experiences traveling, learning, and experiencing a life of which I never thought I'd see.

These are my stories.

An easy read, one which you may spend 20 minutes or so on the bus, or during your lunch break, feeling like you've been involved in a modern adventure full of awkward, relaxed stories and simple life-lessons.

"The first flight went by fast, I sat next to a Jehovah's Witness named Mileesa, although to describe her solely as such wouldn't give her credit. She made zero attempts to convert me. I think it helped that I spilled a bit of coffee on her seat to break the ice."
"When I arrived in Shanghai, I followed the school of fish to the exit, and saw a McDonald's across the street. I hadn't had western food since leaving Buffalo, and this seemed like a prime opportunity to indulge. I wasn't going to see my contact for another 30 minutes, and the restaurant had kiosks to press the picture of the food you wanted. I got myself a pancake wrap and some coffee, and went back outside and ate. Shortly after finishing my meal, nature called. It was three blocks to the nearest public restroom. China doesn't normally have restrooms inside every store, and instead has public restrooms scattered throughout the cities. I still had 20 minutes or so, so I followed the signs and found my way. Oh and by the way, they aren't western toilets. These are holes in the floor, and it's a "bring-your-own-toilet-paper" themed party, anywhere you go.
At around 9:10am, my contact finally called me. Her name was something like "Fangqin"
She spoke English pretty well, but still, communication was difficult.
"Hello is this Tim?"
"Yes it is, how are you?"
"You find Meiyuan Road."
"I've never been in Shanghai before."
"Ok you find me?"
"I can try but I've never been in Shanghai before."
"Ok see you soon.".
Yeah. I'll find you. Thanks Fangqin... I stood outside McDonald's trying to get my WiFi to work, so that I could look up Meiyuan Road for about 20 minutes, until she called me back.
"Did you find?"
"No, I'm lost."
"Ok, I come to you then."
Why would you not just do- nevermind. It all worked out. Fangqin was extremely helpful when all was said and done. She even showed me how to rent a bicycle.
"We go to get your work permit, I follow you."
"I've never been in Shanghai before."
"Ok go ahead."
