Underdog stories in the NFL are very few and far between, particularly at the skill positions, such as quarterback, wide receiver, and running back. Players who accomplish greatness are usually destined for success and become elite athletes before they even hit the age of 10.
But once in a while, you get that Cinderella story, a kid who no one thought had any chance of making it to the top level. They go to a small school like Minnesota State, go unnoticed and undrafted, and then try out for a team, hoping for that one-in-a-million shot of just making the practice squad. Next thing you know, he goes from practice-squad player to Pro Bowl wide receiver in a matter of just a couple of years.
That is the story of Adam Thielen. He's not your traditional NFL wide receiver. He was not blessed with "Tyreek Hill" lightning speed when he was younger. His scholarship to play football at a small college was a meager $500. He had to borrow money from his father just to attend a regional combine where he was not even invited. Even more amazing, he got to play for the pro football team he grew up loving and never had to leave the state of Minnesota from the moment he was born.
Thielen is an inspiration for many. He has illustrated just how you can accomplish anything you put your mind to. You do not have to be gifted with phenom talent as a kid to be great. You can work yourself up to become gifted, even in your 20s. He took out loans just to be able to afford workouts and worked as a dental insurance equipment intern after college.
Thielen always kept the hope alive that he could do what no one else dreamed. He was good in high school and college, but never good enough to get to the next level. He kept playing in his spare time, working on his skills, and striving to be better in every facet of his game.
