Description
Sink into the experience of this early leader in the Indivisible movement. The lessons this rural physician and healthcare advocate shares are the ones that shaped the progressive movement in the midwest. Join on his journey from disenfranchised voter to local activist and on to political leader as he spoke out on healthcare policy, labor rights, and justice reform. Dr. Hurst actively shaped the Midwest's contribution to the Indivisible revolution from his home in rural Iowa. He has become a frequent voice on national television, radio, and print including CNN, NPR, Yahoo Finance, and other international outlets, and helped shape and share the messages of leaders such as Senator Elizabeth Warren, Senator Cory Booker, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. "My wife and I rubbed restless sleep out of our eyes that Wednesday morning. It was the day after the 2016 general election. I knew we had some hard news to share with my 8-year-old daughter, Tierney. For her, election night had started out rough and, obviously, it got worse. Tierney is an activist of her own kind. She is bright, thoughtful, and tender-hearted. When she wanted to change the world, she opened a lemonade stand. The price at her stand was affordable, to get your drink you just had to give someone a compliment; say something nice about someone. Then your drink was complimentary. At her age, I do not think she appreciated her own pun, but it unintentionally demonstrated her sense of humor as well. "- PrefaceThus started my journey from the political sidelines and into the fray of social activism. I would enlist in the Indivisible movement as an early General in the Midwest. As a rural physician, I would rise to defend access to healthcare for all, to face racism and hate speech. I would risk reputation and reward to stand for those who could not stand for themselves. I would reconcile addiction with faith, loss with gratitude, and the unknown with willingness. This journey would draw me back to the missed lessons of my youth, open me to the opportunities of today, and inspire my hope for the future. What started out as raising my voice would eventually put my livelihood and my life in peril."I did not doubt his ability to inflict physical harm. He had a temper, and I had the impression he had been in the military as he made frequent "Semper fi" references in his Facebook posts. Finally, he could take it no more. He moved in behind me, bent over and growled low in my ear, "Put down the newspaper! I'm giving you to the count of 10! "1... "2... " - Indivisible Under GodFaith without works is dead. This journey would be my rebirth and hopefully serve as a light on the path for those who would follow.ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Glenn Hurst, MD is a Family Practice physician in rural Iowa.
