Description
Martin Salander loses his entire fortune to the unscrupulous thief Wohlwend, regains his wealth in Brazil, and returns home, only to discover on the very first day that Wohlwend has once again reduced him to utter poverty.
The novel depicts a world in which values have succumbed to material desire. Despite its flaws, the piece is compelling due to its unexpectedly timely indictment of capitalism.
Biography
Gottfried Keller, who was born in Zurich in 1819 and died in 1890, grew up in humble circumstances. After being forced to leave school due to a prank, he began to draw and write. In 1840, his mother enabled him to begin studies at the Munich Academy of Art, which he did not finish. He returned to Zurich in 1842. Scholarships and his mother's financial support allowed him to spend time in Heidelberg and Berlin, where he produced some of his most significant works. In 1855, he returned to his mother in Zurich, and in 1861, he was named municipal clerk. He retained this position until 1876, following which he devoted all of his attention to his writing. Gottfried Keller passed away in his birthplace of Zurich in 1890.
