Description
The Spessart, a forested expanse in the modern German states of Hesse and Bavaria, has since long ago been the birthplace of legends, ghost stories and fairy tales. A wild region of sparse population and largely untouched by modernity, it was a hunting ground for the nobility and due to its political fragmentation and the trade routes that passed through it, was a haunt of robbers and brigands. This collection of fairy tales was set by Wilhelm Hauff within the framework of the story of a group of travelers who passing through the Spessart are compelled by the onset of nightfall to spend the night in an isolated and questionable inn. Hauff wrote the Inn in the Spessart Forest (Das Wirtshaus I'm Spessart) in 1826, not long after the last of the Spessart brigands had been executed in Heidelberg.
