Why Colombia?
Here are a dozen good reasons I think you should retire in Colombia.
1. Cost of Living
The costs of living in Colombia are among the lowest in any developing country in the world. Colombia consistently ranks in the top five least expensive countries in Latin America. Save up to 80% compared to similar lifestyle in a developed country.
2. Quality of life is high.
The low-stress lifestyle enjoyed by expats in Colombia is excellent. Every day I hear stories from expats who are very happy with their decision to live here. They are more relaxed, eating better, sleeping better, exercising more, no longer needing prescription medications, and adding years of enjoyable living to their lifespan.
3. Relocating to Colombia is easy.
Getting a visa to live here full time and becoming a legal resident is easy and not expensive. The Colombian government has made it very attractive for expats to retire here. The first six months are virtually free. After that, the three-year visa to be a temporary resident costs only about $100 per year. After five years as a temporary resident, you can become a permanent resident with a permanent visa that does not have to be renewed.
4. The food is much healthier than the typical fast-food diet in many countries.
The beef, pork, poultry, vegetable, and fruit farms are within a few miles of the cities. The fruits and vegetables are harvested when closer to being ripe and are transported only short distances to market. The farmers do not always have access to excessive chemical fertilizers and pesticides, so the agricultural methods are more natural and in some cases even organic. Almost all beef available in Colombia is from free-range livestock.
5. Medical care in Colombia is good.
Medical insurance and typical medical care cost a fraction of the United States. Colombia leads South America in number of first-rate hospitals and clinics. Medical and dental insurance is available to everyone, regardless of age or pre-existing conditions, and costs a pittance of other countries.
6. Internet and cell phone services are modern, high speed, and reliable.
Fiber optic cables are in use all around the country, offering Internet speeds up to 120mps. Outlying pueblos have Internet by satellite.
7. The climate is excellent.
There are 14 climate zones in Colombia. You can find your climate sweet spot just by moving farther inland, and living at a higher elevation.
8. Colombia does not have large concentrations of expats.
Because of the ideal climate across Colombia, and the relatively low number of expats, the expats spread out. Expats do not concentrate in enclaves the way they do in the other retirement destination countries.
9. The people of Colombia are friendly.
They charm us with their laid-back lifestyle and it is very easy to date and marry educated, attractive Colombian men and women.
10. Easy to learn the language.
The Spanish language has many similar words to English and is one of the easiest of the world languages for Americans to learn.
11. Flights to the United States and Europe are frequent and not too expensive.
Frequent flights are readily available and take only a few hours. It is easy for expats living in Colombia to bolt back to the USA for first-world amenities, tending to business, family reunions, and spoiling the new grandbabies.
12. No need to own a car.
There are not many reasons to own a car in Colombia unless you want one. Public transportation is inexpensive, efficient, and safe.
This 12-step overview of why I think you should retire and live in Colombia only hits the high spots. There are many other benefits you will discover as you explore Colombia.
