An Unmissable Collection of Essays by John Stuart Mill
On Liberty, Utilitarianism and Other Essays by English philosopher and political economist John Stuart Mill brings together his four key essays, first published between 1859-69 in the US.
A collection of John Stuart Mill's best-known essays.
Excerpt
'In this age, the mere example of non-conformity, the mere refusal to bend the knee to custom, is itself a service. Precisely because the tyranny of opinion is such as to make eccentricity a reproach, it is desirable, in order to break through that tyranny, that people should be eccentric. Eccentricity has always abounded when and where strength of character has abounded; and the amount of eccentricity in a society has generally been proportional to the amount of genius, mental vigor, and moral courage which it contained. That so few now dare to be eccentric, marks the chief danger of the time.'
Synopsis
Bringing together four of Mill's key essays - 'On Liberty', 'Utilitarianism', 'Considerations on Representative Government', and 'The Subjection of Women' - these works explore the concerns which are central to all liberal democratic regimes, including: protecting individual liberties, core principles of ethics, and the importance of gender equality in society.
