(2017), "Midsommar" (2019), "Nós" (2019) e "Saint Maud" (2020) apostaram muito mais no drama, na crítica social e na tensão atmosférica e psicológica para causar medo. Viraram cult, receberam inúmeras críticas, mas também atraíram uma série de admiradores de dentro e de fora do universo dos filmes aterrorizantes.

Inspirados por esse movimento, a antologia "O Novo Horror", organizada pelos escritores Daniel Gruber e Irka Barrios, reúne 20 contos de grandes autores e autoras de diversos lugares do país.
