Description
We begin outside Old Trafford on Wednesday 3 May 2023.
The unveiling of Jimmy Murphy's long awaited statue.
Once Upon a Time in Munich is a short novel telling how United's assistant manager Jimmy, kept the club afloat in the immediate aftermath of the catastrophic events of Thursday 6 February 1958. When at the end of a Munich runway, United lost seven players and later Duncan Edwards. A man driven but inside broken, Jimmy toiled night and day to ensure a club formed eighty years previous in Newton Heath, would not wither and die. For thirteen days before United could take the field once more, an FA cup fifth round match at Old Trafford against Sheffield Wednesday, he plotted, charmed and cajoled. He swore, drank and threatened red murder against all who stood in his path. Jimmy Murphy. Arguably the most important figure in Manchester United's history.
It was a beautiful day, the sun was shining when Jimmy finally came home and the statue was unveiled.
