On his return to Pemberley, following his disastrous proposal to Elizabeth Bennet, Darcy broods alone. He remembers the ancient curse told to him by his father. An ancestor of George Wickham made a terrible prophecy on the gallows. A prophecy which, if true, would mean he would be the last of the Darcys.Unsurprisingly this memory makes him realise that it is futile to pursue Lizzy further. He considers remaining a bachelor for the rest of his days and devoting himself to philanthropic works.He decides to write a letter to Lizzy explaining his actions towards Wickham as a means of at least setting the record straight.
