About North and South

"In Mr. Thornton's face the straight brows fell over the clear deep-set earnest eyes, which, without being unpleasantly sharp, seemed intent enough to penetrate into the very heart and core of what he was looking at."

Elizabeth Gaskell's celebrated novel North and South, published in book form in 1855, tells the story of Margaret Hale who moves with her parents to the fictional northern industrial town of Milton. Witnessing the brutal reality of the industrial revolution, Margaret clashes with mill-owner and self-made man John Thornton, all the while fighting a growing attraction to him.

Exploring the contrast between the values of rural southern England and the industrial north, Gaskell's novel has a psychological complexity which anticipates George Eliot's later novels of provincial life. Cleverly pairing personal relations with social issues, she created one of the most unique and engaging heroines in Victorian literature.
