Beck has been kidnapped by Gothart, the Silvabarrone and Tarn's old friend. Tarn is forced to follow Gothart, who wants to extract the elfin light, a powerful magical force contained inside Tarn.

As Tarn faces his past, he meets Paracleus, newly arrived via portal from the world of Arria. Beck has already met Jobe, who wound up trapped with Beck inside his prison cell.

As Beck and Tarn plan their escapes with Jobe and Paracleus, their friends Eric, Nutmeg, and Cecily are looking for them, accompanied by Tarn and Beck's dopplegangers Lake and River.
