Description
In the first book in this series of four, Gillian inherits her great-aunt's bookshop, along with her house in Canada.
She leaves Britain to live there, and her father also moves to Canada. He intends to stay with her until he can find a place of his own. He is in the process of divorcing her mother, who is a horrid person, hated by both daughter and husband.
Gillian wants to modernise the shop to encourage new customers who read e-books, and has many ideas about how to do this is a innovative way.
The shop also sells second-hand books and Gillian finds what may be a rare and extremely valuable volume in a box of used books left in the storeroom, but here unforeseen problems start.
She tells no one of the book, as she wishes to find out its value first, and also who brought it in, because she feels they are entitled to some of the profit if it is valuable.
Akando, a Native American, who she befriended on a visit to her aunt some years before, re-enters her life. His grandfather can 'see' things, and he tells her she is in danger regarding a secret. The only secret she has at that time is the book she found. Her friend Akando is so sure his grandfather is right he acts as her bodyguard, seriously worried about her safety.
How to find the owner and value of the book looks like being next to impossible, even though it should have been easy. The book appears not to exist, so getting a valuation while keeping it secret that she even knows of the book's existence is the first hurdle, especially if she is in danger, without knowing from what or how.
