Description

This book is unique in the literature that populates the discussion around the scientific theory of organic evolution. Much as been written about this subject over the last two hundred years. Many have tried to show that the theory is compatible or incompatible with Christian Theism or a religious world view. Most of that discussion has been in and around the empirical viability and overall intelligibility of the scientific theory of evolution.

However, in this book, we take a very different approach: a philosophical and theological.

If one is a theist and believes in organic evolution (an evolutionary theist), then the evolutionary theist face what appear to be insurmountable philosophical and theological problems. In this book, we assume, if you are an evolutionary theist, that you would hold the following propositions: a) God exists, b) God organizes human physical bodies through organic evolution, and c) the designator 'child of God' is rigid, exclusive, and theologically meaningful. It seems clear to us that any evolutionary theist would grant the truth of these assumptions.

However, if these assumptions are granted, multiple philosophical and theological conundrums ensue. We attempt to establish these issues through four, formally valid, deductive arguments: 1) The Arbitrary Body Argument, 2) The 'Made in His Image' Argument, 3) The Pairing Problem, and 4) The No Body Argument.

These four arguments are unique, novel, and logically robust. Although we employ a Latter-day Saint perspective with respect to theology, we believe that with minor changes, the theological arguments can hold for any monotheistic framework.

All of this is to show, if one holds fixed the three assumptions above, demonstrative philosophical and theological issues arise for the evolutionary theist. One must either reject theism or organic evolution. Consequently, we reject evolution as the mechanism by which God organizes organic human bodies.
