Description

"Oh, Whistle, and I'll Come to You, My Lad": An ancient ghost haunts a Cambridge professor during his investigation of Templar ruins. In visiting the seaside locale he uncovers a device with Latin inscriptions that he can't quite decipher. It turns out to be a whistle containing a cabalistic, runic inscription that translates as "oh, whistle, and I'll come to you, my lad." What could possibly be wrong with that?

"Casting the Runes": Dunning is cursed after sending in a negative review of occultist Karswell's paper on witchcraft. Poor Dunning learns the last negative reviewer has just died in a freak accident. Karswell, it seems, may have cursed both men by slipping them an ellusive slip of parchment adorned with some ancient runic symbols. How easily it slides from one's grasp, and how alarming are the consequences!

Both of these classic tales epitomize the horror genre in English and American literature, and both might well be called suspense thrillers that deal with the supernatural or paranormal. Both Poe and James show remarkable skill here at delving into the psychology of the individual faced with the unknown and the occult and some terrible manifestations of evil surviving from ancient times.

In "Oh, Whistle and I'll Come to You, My Lad," for example, the protagonist discovers a remnant of a discredited sect, in the ruins of a church built by the Templars or Knights Templar. This armed brotherhood of Knights famously served their Church for hundreds of years with honors, mainly as protectors of travellers and Crusaders, but they fell under the shadow of criminal accusations from Church leaders in the 1300s, and were charged with blasphemy. Eventually officers of the Inquisition arrived to investigate the rumors against the Knights Templar and to torture them into confessions. Many of the Templars' leaders ultimately were sentenced by courts of the Inquisition to be burned alive for practicing sacriledge, heresy, and even witchcraft.
