Description
A routine dog walk in Marston Woods ends in disaster when a tangled lead, a burst of canine enthusiasm, and Quentin -- the uncontrollable dog at the heart of it all -- leaves one woman covered in mud and one man publicly condemned. By nightfall, David has been tried and convicted on social media, branded a danger to women by the very dog-walking community he thought he belonged to.
Determined to clear his name, David joins a protest against Lord Hartford's decision to ban dogs from the woods. But when a radical environmental group hijacks the demonstration, Quentin once again becomes the unwitting spark that ignites chaos. A confrontation with the police transforms David into an unlikely eco-warrior and draws him into a campaign to uncover the landowner's true -- and deeply troubling -- motives.
David's newfound notoriety brings him back into contact with Alice, another COVID refugee from London whose life has been reshaped by the pandemic. Though drawn together by shared loss, Alice remains wary - insisting that David must first confront the failures of his marriage before she will trust him with her heart.
When David returns to London to support his wife's environmental activism, Quentin once again becomes the catalyst. A climate demonstration descends into violence, Quentin is incarcerated in a dog pound, and David is left hospitalized with serious head injuries. As accusations fly and truths emerge, David finally accepts that his marriage cannot be saved.
He returns to Marston just as the true -- and disturbing -- reason for the closure of the woods finally comes to light.
A darkly comic, sharply observed novel about dogs and their owners, reputation and outrage, and the strange clarity that comes from seeing the world through the eyes of an errant dog.
A word from the author:
Dog walkers are an unusual breed of people -stoic and resilient - committed as they are to trudging the paths, pavements, parks and fields of their locality to satisfy the needs of their canine companions. As you get to know them, each has a different story to tell and it's through the channel of dog walking that I have met so many unassuming but deeply interesting people.
This book is a celebration of the unique relationship between people and dogs and a thank-you to the many dog walkers (known only by the names of their dogs) that I've met as I've exercised my own canine friend.
