Description

In this coming of age story, set in the West Midlands, United Kingdom, Phillip Broad is a boy who has known for a while that he would rather be a girl. He knows that it's not a phase. His need to express his femininity tugs at something deep down within himself. Phillip longs to have long hair and wear dresses like mother and sister do. But he also wants to be treated like a girl and have others view him as one.

It is a complicated situation with no easy answers and it is made all the worse when Phillip's traditional father goads him into more masculine pursuits to make him into a man. Phillip tries his hand at football and rugby but nothing seems to work. He is more drawn to feminine activities like trying on makeup.

Phillip's mother, Anne though, is more supportive. She understands that her son is going through something that is difficult and wants the best for her child - even going to the extent of taking him to a psychiatrist to gain an insight into his condition.

So begins a complex dynamic at home with Phillip increasingly showing his feminine side - sometimes going by the name Justine - with the help of this mother, while Phillip's father showing his disgust at his new daughter. Eventually, something has to give and when it does will Phillip remain or will Justine stay?

In the third part of the story, Justine visits her cousin Matthew. She is anxious whether Matthew and accept her as a girl but it turns out Matthew had a secret of his own. Initially reluctant, Matthew shares his secret with Justine and later on with his own family and a deeper, meaningful bond is forged between the cousins. But Justine isn't the only one with changes in her life as her mother Anne also has a romantic relationship in her life. Will the new mother and daughter make it through it all?
