An excerpt from this Matthew Stafford biography:

Down by one with less than 10 seconds remaining. The ball moves across half-court. One dribble, two dribbles. The ball moves to just outside the foul line. The shot goes up... the crowd intently stares with anticipation... the ball slices through the net and it's good! The crowd explodes. Teammates mob the player who made the winning shot. The hero raises his arms in victory to the cheering crowd. They win the game, all by the virtue of that one made shot.

This scene has played out countless times in arenas and on fields around the country, at every level of every sport. The victorious teams and fans celebrate, but how frequently does the audience ever look over to the other side?

Every player on the other team shows the dejection and despair that comes along with defeat, made all the more bitter for having fallen in the last possible moments of the game. Some fall to the ground, while others silently walk off the court. Either way, all of the attention goes to the victor. Meanwhile, the losing team is left to deal with the anguish themselves.

That, of course, is both the beauty and the agony of sports. For every winner, there must also be a loser. Someone must be on the opposite side of that magic moment for the victor. History glorifies the winner, but what of the loser?

The Buffalo Bills of the '90s did something that no team in the history of the NFL has ever done: they played in four straight Super Bowls. However, despite this Herculean feat, most people cannot name their head coach, and, outside of Buffalo, all of their players' legacies are tarnished by that one fault.
