In ancient Ireland, Niamh, daughter of Manannan, has been an outcast from birth. When she reaches marriageable age, she is sent away to an unknown husband who does not know her family history, with its reputation for magic. She never reaches her destination. Her horse falls and she is swept away by a raging river. She is found and taken to a convent. but she has lost her memory. Certain articles found with her, suggest that she is of high status. So, the nuns decide to send her to the High King, where she might be recognised. On the way, her party is attacked by raiding Vikings and Niamh is kidnapped. Further adventures follow and, along the way, Niamh finds both romance and her long-lost father.
