Aveda Johnson lives a quiet life in a small Mississippi town with her four big dogs. Not much interesting ever happens to her, until the dreams begin. They start small, with a red ball, which mysteriously appears in her yard the following morning. A Golden Retriever arrives to take the ball, followed by his owner, attractive construction worker, Mark Rialto, who is rebuilding the Victorian house across the street.

Soon, Aveda finds her nights filled with vivid dreams of a house fire and a double homicide, all taking place on the property where Mark is reconstructing the house that stood for nearly two-hundred years. After learning from Mark that the house was destroyed in a fire, she begins looking into the history of the place. What she discovers is disturbing, to say the least, and enough to make Mark believe that her dreams might be more than mind fiction.

The seriousness of the situation doesn't detract from Aveda's attraction to Mark. Like a schoolgirl with a crush, Aveda turns into a clumsy, nervous mess when he's near. Though she fights her attraction to Mark at first, before long, her feelings for him are as out of control as the increasingly intense dreams that threaten to consume her whole.

They enlist the help of local unofficial historian, Verona Miller. She provides key information that aligns with Aveda's dreams. During their second meeting, an intense storm breaks up their gathering before Aveda can get the information she needs to fill in the gaps. The aftermath threatens to leave her suspended in a state of subconscious nightly torture.
