Description
Are you looking for a way to introduce a young reader to one of the all-time classics (without them knowing it)? Then this is the book for you!
In this heartwarming and funny reimagining of the Odyssey, Homer, a young otter, finds himself washed away from his burrow in a great flood. Injured and alone in the city, he is nursed back to health by a kindly veterinarian and her daughter. But when he learns he is fated to spend the rest of his days at the city zoo, he knows he must escape. With the help of Stanley, another young, injured otter, the two friends must leave the world of humans and return to the wild so they can rescue Homer's family from a gang of evil minks who have invaded the family's home.
Along the way many of Odysseus's adventures are reinvented with humor and without the violence. Instead of landing on Circe's island where Odysseus's men are turned into animals, in this version the otters find an island where animals act like humans. The sirens are turned into rattlesnakes and the cyclops becomes a one-eyed trapper who seeks the otters' pelts. Nearly all of Odysseus's adventures are rewritten so they are suitable for children but in a way that the older, more sophisticated reader can recognize and chuckle at.
In all, there are nearly 100 separate references to the original work both overt and subtle, from the reinvention of whole adventures to the inclusion of single speeches and images.
Perhaps the best summary of the book came from the review it received from Reedsy Discovery.
"The book is a beautifully crafted retelling of a classic tale.
